Stations of the Cross

Our Stations are those of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorists.

The somewhat abstract Stations of the Cross installed at St. Gerard Majella Church are original to the building.  Built into the walls of the church using the same brown brick, they are highlighted by a chrome cross representing Christ as he moves through the traditional 14 stations of his Passion.  Each station is presented by an embelishment in the brick surface with a symbol.  There is an additional 15th Station representing the Resurrection.  The small bronze plaques were added in the early 2000's to assist in the identification of each station

The fifteen Stations of the Cross are mounted sequentially, culminating in the glazed brick resurrection station at the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.  Each station is a basic expression of the action that took place at that station, with the polished stainless steel cross reflecting light to symbolize that it is the "Light of Light" that gives the cross its meaning.  Without the "Light of Light", the cross is a cruel instrument of torture and death, but the Light of God upon that cross makes it the vehicle of God's redeeming grace.

For those who might find them meaningful, some symbols are subtly cut into the brick.
