Sacred Music at SGM

Sacred Music is an elevated form of prayer that brings voices into union so that minds and hearts may also be united. When there is music at Mass, it should accompany the actions and words of the priest, highlighting the themes of the particular Sunday or Feast we celebrate.  Sacred Music expresses the truths of the Sacrament and Sacrifice of the Mass, which are already present but made more glorious to our senses.

Adult Choir

The Adult Choir at SGM is a thriving group of volunteer singers who provide music at the 9:00am Sunday Mass as well as special Holy Days and liturgical feasts.  With years of experience and a love for learning, the choir enjoys singing a variety of musical styles and works towards a high level of musicianship.  This is a welcoming, warm-hearted group of parishioners who love giving of their talents to serve the church and the Lord through music!  Younger singers with advanced musical training are also welcome to join.  No auditions are necessary; just a desire to make beautiful music for Mass.  The ability to sing in “parts” is helpful, but not a prerequisite.  Many singers have learned along the way and are enthusiastic to help new members learn.  Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7pm-8:30pm and at 8am on Sunday mornings.  If interested, contact: music@sgmparish.org.

Resurrection Choir

The Resurrection Choir at SGM is a group of men and women who minister to grieving families through the gift of music.  Members attend funerals and memorial Masses as their schedule permits, usually during the weekday morning hours.  They gather about 15 minutes before the funeral Mass to rehearse the selected hymns.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join!  If you wish to be added to the email list for this choir, please contact: music@sgmparish.org.

Cherub Choir

This is for children grades K-2.  They sing for the pre-school prayer services, and combined with the Children's Choir on special occasions such as Christmas Eve and Palm Sunday.  Their rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoons from 2:00pm - 2:30pm, beginning in November until Christmas.  Then we break until Lent when we start practice again in March to prepare for Palm Sunday.

For more information or to schedule an audition, please contact Elizabeth Colozza, Director of Sacred Music at (314) 965-3985, ext. 2817, or music@sgmparish.org.

The 11:00 Mass Music Team

The SGM 11:00am Sunday Mass is blessed with a contemporary music ensemble of dedicated teens and adults.  Instruments and vocal talents are welcome to join this vibrant group.  Please contact the Director of Sacred Music for more information.  Rehearsals take place on Sunday mornings before the 11:00am Mass.

Cantors

Our volunteer cantors assist the music ministry in a special way by prayerfully leading the singing at Mass, including the Responsorial Psalm, Gospel Acclamation and antiphons.  Opportunities to cantor include the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday and the 9:00am Mass on Sundays as well as occasional Holy Days.  The commitment is minimal (once every 6 - 8 weeks) but so appreciated!  Because this is a leadership role in music ministry, auditions are required.  Rehearsals are held on Thursdays at 6:30pm preceding your assigned Mass or by arrangement with the director/accompanist.

Young Cantors

For our more advanced singers in grades 6-8, we offer the opportunity to cantor at school Masses and occasionally at a weekend Mass during the school year.  Rehearsals are held as needed (generally 1-2 times before a scheduled Mass); PSR students, SGM school students and homeschoolers are all welcome to audition.

Instrumentalists

Instrumentalists are a valuable addition to our Sacred Music ensembles!  We invite all who play an instrument to consider volunteering for weekend Masses.  We will happily work with your schedule.  Auditions are required to discern where your talents can best be appreciated.  Opportunities may be available at the 5:00pm Saturday Vigil Mass and the 9:00am and 11:00am Sunday Masses.

Children's Praise

This group is open to all children in grades 3-5 who like to sing.  They have one Saturday afternoon rehearsal an hour before the assigned 5:00pm Mass once every 4-6 weeks.  It's an easy time commitment, and a joyous way to praise God with friends!
