Healing Mass - February 24

We’re continuing in this season of Lent, a time devoted to repentance and receiving the mercy of God. The music, readings, and psalms of this season are a constant reminder of our own woundedness, and of our desire to be restored by Christ. One very important part of the season of Lent are the Sacraments of Healing, and while many people try to prioritize going to confession as part of their Lenten practices, we also can’t overlook the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as part of the Lord’s ministry of healing through the Church.

For a long time, the Anointing of the Sick was seen as something that is most important as we’re nearing death, and that’s certainly true! Extreme Unction, as it was typically referred to, calls to mind the strength, mercy, and healing that Christ brings us, even as we prepare to meet him after death. And yet, as much as Jesus in his public ministry was present for those who were dying (or even those who had died), he was constantly offering healing to those suffering physical afflictions and illness. The Church continues this ministry by offering the Anointing of the Sick to people suffering serious physical illness or advanced age, whether in the hospital, in the home, in a care or rehab facility, and even at Mass.

This Sacrament is a powerful one. We also pray for physical healing, if it’s God’s will for us, but the effects are first and foremost spiritual. The sacrament grants the forgiveness of sins (although serious sin should still be brought to Confession) and stirs our souls with confidence in the mercy and love of God. In moments of sickness, where we might wrestle with doubt or despair, the sacrament comforts and strengthens us against those temptations, and gives us the hope of knowing that we’re not alone - Christ and his Church are there with us.

This Saturday, February 24 at 9:00 am, we’ll be celebrating a special Mass of Healing, where we’ll offer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick to those who desire it. Of course, this sacrament is for those suffering serious physical ailments or conditions, so please keep that in mind! While cold and flu season is getting pretty bad, that’s not really the target of this sacrament. Anyone is welcome to join us, even if not receiving the anointing themselves, as we pray for those who are sick and suffering in our own families and parish community!
