Attending Mass regularly is a privilege and obligation for
Catholics – it is the primary source of our prayers to the Father
and where we encounter Jesus most closely through His Body
and Blood. The roots of the Mass lie in the very beginning of the
Church, and incorporate many traditions and symbolism added
over the centuries. However, even Catholics who participate
regularly may have a limited understanding of the different
parts of the Mass, the meaning of the words we hear and the
prayers we offer. Why does the priest hold his hands over the
chalice at certain times? What is the meaning of the “collect”?
How does the priest decide which color of vestments to wear?
On Monday, January 16 at 7 pm, (Martin Luther King Day, so
no conflict with PSR), Father Skillman will teach an
“understanding of the Mass” – not the “real” celebration, but a
walk through of the order of Mass at the SGM church, explaining
the purpose and symbolism woven into this most important
liturgical event. This is a great opportunity for all parishioners,
young and old, regular or infrequent attendees, to become
more familiar with this gift of our faith. This is a terrific way to
start the new year ‐ to know the Mass is to love the Mass! Mark
January 16 on your calendar now, and plan to grow your faith in
2017!
